BWI World Council welcomes first IFA signed at regional level

Members of BWI’s World Council on 5 October 2022 welcomed the signing of the first international framework agreement (IFA) with a multinational company outside of Europe.

The agreement, signed by BWI with Argos, a multinational company that produces and markets cement and ready mix concrete, covers the activities of the Colombian company, provides additional protection to labour rights previously guaranteed, and ensures compliance with the ILO's core Conventions set out in the Fundamental Principles of Labour Rights throughout the company's operations and value chain.

The IFA also introduces a dispute resolution mechanism and sets a reference group which will meet at least every two years, bringing together trade union representatives from the countries where the company operates and BWI and the Argos management. This group will carry out a joint evaluation of its implementation and enforcement.

The agreement covers 9,500 workers in the United States, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Panama, Colombia, Suriname, Guatemala, Guyana. BWI affiliates SINTRAINCEHSA (Honduras), SITICEDPA (Panama) and SUTIMAC-Intergremial (Colombia) have signed in presence of SUNTRACS (Panama) and Intergremial (Colombia) as witnesses.

Meanwhile, the World Council in preparation for the elections in BWI’s 5th World Congress, invited the heads of affiliated delegations to come to the IT corner to ensure that they will not have any problems voting. The Council also reminded them of the deadline for appointments on 6 October 6, 8:00 pm, while the Resolutions Committee said that the deadline for urgent resolutions is on 6 October, 10:00 am.

The World Council also reviewed BWI’s activity report for the past inter-congress period as well as the strategic plan for the 2023-2026 period.
