CGU to hold webinar on perils of Philippine terror law
In solidarity with the broad Philippine trade union movement, the Council of Global Unions (CGU), a partnership between the International Trade Union Confederation, Global Union Federations and the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD, will hold a democracy webinar on 18 September on the recently passed Anti-Terror Law, its implications on workers' rights and how it is part of a global authoritarian project.
Some of the webinar’s resource persons include ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow, renowned Filipino journalist and 2018 Time’s Person of the Year Maria Ressa, Philippine Commission on Human Rights Commissioner Gwen Pimentel-Gana, BWI and FFW leader Sonny Matula, ACT Representative France Castro, Educational International Secretary David Edwards and SENTRO Secretary General Josua Mata.
BWI, a member of CGU, joins Filipino workers in reclaiming shrinking democratic spaces and pushing back against attempts to undermine trade union rights and democracy. Amidst widespread hunger and unemployment, what workers need is more democracy, not state tyranny.
