Gail Cartmail is new TUC President

BWI congratulates Gail Cartmail for being elected as President of the United Kingdom’s Trade Union Congress (TUC) at its annual congress which took place online on Monday and Tuesday this week. Cartmail, who is BWI Deputy President and Assistant General Secretary at Unite the Union, will assume her position in 2021 wherein she will chair TUC’s general council and executive committee.
Cartmail is a seasoned trade unionist, health and safety campaigner, and women rights advocate. She began her trade union work in 1977 working on trade union rights, occupational health and safety and gender equality. She is also a former Commissioner at the UK Commission for Employment and Skills.
In a Twitter post after her election as TUC President, Cartmail said: “when one woman achieves something she does so for all women. And I do so wish our dear sister Jin Sook Lee was with us to celebrate another step forward for women in leadership.”
