India: Multi-stakeholder consultation on green jobs and buildings held ahead of COP27

Last 3 November, the BWI-affiliated Thamizhaga Kattida Thozhilalargal Madhiya Sangam (TKTMS) in the Tamil Nadu State of India organised a state-level multi-stakeholder consultation on green buildings and green jobs. The event was convened under the aegis of the Construction and Real Estate Industry Coalition (CRIC) led by  TKTMS President Ponkumar Ponnuswamy.

The consultation aimed to deepen the different stakeholders’ understanding on the principles of green buildings and green jobs, deepen workers’ awareness on climate change, promote multistakeholders’ dialogue, and push for enabling policies to mitigate the immediate effects of climate change to workers.

The event had the support of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), and was participated by over 100 district and local level trade union cadres from across the state. Representatives from the Builders’ Association of India (BAI), the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India (CREDAI), the State Legislative Assembly, the Parliament, the BWI and Larsen and Toubro (L&T), the largest infrastructure company in India, also attended the event.

BWI General Secretary Ambet Yuson gave his solidarity greetings to the organisers and participants of the activity. He emphasised the role of trade unions in responding to climate change, and outlined BWI’s commitment to climate justice ahead of Council of Parties (COP) 27.

Ponnuswamy said that they organised the consultation to strengthen collaboration and partnership amongst key stakeholders on climate change mitigation measures with a strong sectoral approach.

“We are thankful to all the key stakeholders, including the employers, government leaders and experts, for their support and commitment as we collectively work on this issue. Going forward, we shall submit a representation to the State Chief Minister to incentivise and give concessions to the construction of green buildings and ensure green and ecent jobs for Indian workers,” he said.
