Innovative union organising gains ground in Ghana
Supported by BWI and IndustriEnergi-Norway, the initiative, which began in 2017, has resulted in the successful organising of workers employed in several companies.
For 2022, TWU organised workers in 2 companies complete with bargaining certificates. A total of 162 workers, 46 women and 79 youth, were recruited and registered in TWU’s electronic data management system.
The union also held this year a leadership workshop for 33 women trade unionists, with strong focus on communication skills training. Another 20 workers were trained as Industrial Relation Officers (IRO) to handle the union’s electronic membership data management.
These accomplishments were assessed in a “review meeting” on 24-25 November which brought together TWU leaders, youth and women representatives, as well as BWI and IndustriEnergi leaders.
BWI Regional Representative for Africa and Middle East Crecentia Mofokeng expressed her thanks to Ole Kristian-Paulsen, International adviser for IndustriEnergi- Norway. She acknowledged IndustriEnergi’s continuing support for trade union organising in Ghana and its invaluable sharing of experiences with local trade unionists.
Both BWI and IndustriEnergi expressed their satisfaction with TWU’s organising work and looked forward to more accomplishments from the union in the future.
