#IWMD24: Enough is Enough!

On this Workers Memorial Day, the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) and its affiliates worldwide unite to speak out against work-related deaths.

In solemn remembrance of the workers who have tragically passed away, BWI stands in solidarity with those affected by workplace accidents and diseases. According to the November 2023 report by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the latest estimate for work-related accidents and diseases nears 3 million, with 2.6 million deaths attributed to work-related diseases and 330,000 to fatal accidents. This represents a more than 5 percent increase compared to 2015—a trend that is clear, alarming, and utterly unacceptable. Each of these fatalities could and should have been preventable.

Therefore, this year, BWI and its affiliates rally under the theme "Enough is Enough!,” with more than 130 planned activities, calling for a collective effort to ensure that all workers have the right to go home safe and alive. It is imperative that workers are aware of their rights and that employers understand their obligations to identify, assess, and control hazards in the workplace.

BWI urges governments and employers worldwide to take decisive action by prioritising the safety and health of workers. This includes providing adequate resources, training, and protective equipment. Additionally, there is an urgent need to strengthen legislation and enforcement mechanisms to protect workers from hazardous working conditions.

As we pay tribute to the workers who lost their lives or were injured on the job, let us recommit ourselves to the fight for safe and healthy workplaces for all. Together, let us strive for a future where every worker can return home safely at the end of the day.
