Malaysia: Woman union leader elected to FSC Board
Malaysian trade unionist Engrit Liaw was recently elected as a member of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Malaysia Board of Directors from 2022 to 2024.
Liaw, who is currently the General Secretary of Sabah Timber Industries Employees’ Union (STIEU) and Chair of the BWI Malaysian Liaison Council, has a long and sterling track record of organising and representing workers in Sabah, Malaysia.
She is a passionate advocate and defender of migrant workers’ rights, particularly championing the rights and welfare of migrant workers in the Sabah state who are victims of unfair dismissals, wage theft and union busting.
Liaw has also contributed substantially to labour law and social protection reforms in Malaysia.
BWI is proud of Liaw’s election to the FSC Malaysia Board and looks forward to the reforms that she will promote to advance workers’ rights.
FSC Malaysia began in 2002 when a small group of interested stakeholders embarked on an effort to establish a Malaysian presence for FSC – the FSC National Initiative.
In 2014, FSC International opened its door to sustainable forest management in Malaysia and officially launched of its national office in Malaysia.
