Mexico ratifies ILO Convention 190
On 6 July 2022, Mexico, represented by Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights Martha Delgado Peralta, deposited the instrument of ratification of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention No. 190 on violence and harassment in workplaces, together with Recommendation 206, at the ILO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
Mexico joins other countries in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region that has ratified the convention, namely: Uruguay (2020), Argentina (2021), Ecuador (2021), El Salvador (2022) and Peru (2022).
According to the BWI-affiliated International Workers’ Confederation (CIT), 22.6 percent of Mexican women workers have denounced being victims of various forms of workplace violence. Among them, 19.3 percent were victims of harassment.
"At the CIT, we have undertaken important efforts to expose these acts of violence. We have also taken steps to prevent harassment from being normalized,” CIT President Napoleón Gómez Urrutia said.
Gómez Urrutia, who is also a sitting Senator of the General Congress of the United Mexican States, played a strategic role in the ratification of the convention. In his capacity as Senator, he not only promoted the importance of this agreement at the legislative level, but also voted for its ratification last 15 March, 2022.
“As President of the CIT, I say it loud and clear: every worker, regardless of gender, has the right to feel safe and enjoy safe spaces free from discrimination and harassment,” Gómez Urrutia said.
