On the eve of International Workers’ Memorial Day 2019, the SGIP trade union of North Macedonia organised a special training for occupational health and safety representatives. The training aimed at strengthening skills and capacities of trade union health and safety representatives in the construction industry.

“We cannot overestimate the role of occupational health and safety representatives on the construction sites in North Macedonia,” said Ivan Pesevski, SGIP Vice-President. Pesevski added, “Sometimes their work is invisible, but they are the ones who make workers come back home safe and alive. Safe work on construction sites is a key priority for our union.”

One of the important goals of the training was to share best practices in the field of safe work in construction and to formulate proposals for the new law on safety and health at work. With the expertise of health and safety expert Professor Lazar Jovevski, a comparative analysis of the North Macedonia national legislation in the field of occupational health and safety in the construction industry and the EU Directive 89/391 was completed.

All participants left the session chanting “Unions Make Work Safer!”
