Enough is enough! Work accidents must stop!—EFBWW and BWI
As the world observes International Workers’ Memorial Day on 28 April, the European Federation of Building and Wood Workers (EFBWW) and the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) have issued a joint statement to commemorate workers who have lost their lives in workplace accidents. With a resounding call of "enough is enough," EFBWW and BWI asserted the fundamental right of all workers to return home safely after their work.
In their statement, EFBWW and the BWI urged their affiliates to mobilise members and allies to advocate for safer working conditions, emphasising limiting subcontracting, ensuring joint liability across supply chains, and promoting direct, quality employment. They stressed adherence to EU occupational safety laws, specialised training for high-risk professions, and proposed measures such as a financial support fund for affected workers. EFBWW and BWI also advocated for digital solutions for real-time monitoring of worker presence, highlighted the importance of exemplary safety standards on publicly funded projects, and underscored the need for strong enforcement mechanisms.
