Myanmar Report: Organising beyond borders
The Building and Woodworkers' International (BWI) published a report on Myanmar that detailed the efforts of Burmese trade unions to restore democracy in the country. It tells the experiences of courageous trade unionists inside and outside Myanmar who find innovative ways to continue their organising and advocacy work in the face of a perilous political landscape, even risking their liberty and lives to bring the military junta's rule to an end.
The unusual circumstances and difficulties brought about by the military takeover on 1 February 2021 forced Myanmar's trade unions to organise workers and make extraordinary contributions to the popular resistance against military rule. As part of the "Organising Beyond Borders Project," the Building and Woodworkers Federation of Myanmar (BWFM), the Confederation of Trade Unions of Myanmar (CTUM), and other national sectoral unions that are CTUM members adopted a new trade union organising strategy by maximising "democratic spaces" both inside and outside of Myanmar where the military junta's power and influence are weak.
