Namibia: Women workers hold the line against gender-based violence
Justina Jonas serves as the General Secretary of the Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union (MANWU). Her journey began 21 years ago when she was appointed as a receptionist at the organisation. After four years in this position, Justina was promoted to the position of branch organiser. In 2010, she assumed responsibility for leading MANWU’s Education Department and implementing related educational activities across Namibia.
Through her work, she educated and engaged workers on various issues, including occupational health and safety, labour rights and responsibilities, and different forms of discrimination. Her dedication to improving workers’ lives led to her election as the first woman General Secretary of MANWU in 2012. Since then, Justina has led the organisation with kindness, empathy, and integrity, successfully preserving and enhancing workers’ lives across the country.
Justina believes in tackling challenges head-on and is equally passionate about overcoming barriers that hinder the realisation of democracy for all workers. She views real democracy as the ability to pursue personal and professional goals, voice opinions, take advantage of equal opportunities to demonstrate capability and intelligence, and contribute to national and local governance processes without facing unfair discrimination. This encompasses enjoying a work environment free from harassment, discrimination, and violence based on one’s sex, gender, or status.
Having experienced gender-based violence (GBV) firsthand and received reports of similar incidents from predominantly women workers, Justina believes that trade unions have the mandate and obligation to protect and empower workers and provide them with the necessary tools for personal and professional growth. She is confident in fostering the potential of young women and men through educational programs and determination.
Inclusivity is essential for democracy. Justina emphasises that democracy cannot exist without eliminating all forms of violence and discrimination in society. Trade unions must create and maintain inclusive workplaces that uphold human dignity, preserve mental and physical health, and ensure security for all workers. Failure to do so will set back years of progress and lead to overall regression.
“As the first woman General Secretary of MANWU, I have a responsibility to ensure that fellow women are empowered and have access to information on equality, equity, GBV, etc. I trust in the MANWU membership and its power to continue challenging injustices and holding those in power accountable, irrespective of the circumstances.” – Justina Jonas, General Secretary of MANWU (Namibia) and a member of the BWI Africa and Middle East Regional Committee, BWI World Council, BWI World Board
