Norway: Fellesforbundet holds successful congress, celebrates remarkable growth and achievements
The BWI-affiliated Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (Fellesforbundet) held its 9th national meeting at the Oslo Congress Center from 20 to 25 October, 2023. The event marked, among many, the election of a new leadership, the association’s impressive growth to 170,000 members, and its strong stance on international issues, particularly on global peace.
One of the highlights of Fellesforbundet’s gathering was the election of a new set of leaders that is expected to bring the organisation to new heights in the next couple of years. Jørn Eggum and Kine Asper Vistnes were unanimously re-elected as union president and deputy president, demonstrating the trust and confidence the members place in their leadership. Additionally, Clas Delp, Hege Espe, Christian Justnes, and Dag-Einar Sivertsen retained their positions as union secretaries, reflecting the continuity and deep experience within the leadership team. Two new faces, Joachim Espe and Steffen Høiland, were elected as union secretaries as well, bringing fresh perspectives to the organisation's leadership.
Fellesforbundet celebrated its remarkable growth by taking pride with its 170,000 members; making it the biggest trade union association in Norway. This showcases the association's pivotal role in representing the interests of a diverse range of workers and its strong relevance among the working population.
Eggum, in his opening speech, underscored Fellesforbundet’s strong commitment to addressing global issues. Fellesforbundet expressed solidarity with the people of Ukraine, condemning the brutal invasion and advocating for the observance of international laws and protections for civilians. The association also voiced its concerns about the Israel-Palestine conflict, calling for a ceasefire and civilians’ access to humanitarian aid.
BWI congratulated its Norwegian affiliate for its successful congress and lauded its achievements in promoting trade union rights, global peace, and climate justice. It pointed to Fellesforbundet’s strong sense of workers’s solidarity that enabled it to respond well to issues and concerns relevant to workers. “Our international solidarity is rooted in solid values that we share. Those of a fair society based on a sustainable economic model that serves the people, protects the planet, and finally brings back to our world what we need most: peace and justice!” BWI General Secretary Ambet Yuson said.
