The Construction, Metal, Wooden and Related Industries Employees Union (CMWEU), one of the BWI affiliates in the construction sector in Mauritius has gone a step further by engaging the government in its efforts to fight gender-based violence. The union has rolled the government onboard in the BWI STOP GENDER BASED VIOLENCE Campaign.
As part of their campaign, the CMWEU is calling for the development of national labour laws to, “call time on gender-based violence and harassment in the world of work.”
The Mauritius government through the Minister of Labour, Mr Soodesh Callichurn committed to support the campaign and work with BWI and CMWEU in ensuring that gender-based violence is stopped.
Reeaz Chuttoo, the union Executive Member argued that the problem of women in Mauritius is structural. He pointed out that some sectors, where many women work, do not even have a "Remuneration Order". He stated, "For years, many women working in the free zone had the lowest salary in the country.”
In addition, Jane Ragoo, one of the Women Leaders in the CMWEU and Executive Member of the union called on all women leaders to make decisions that support other women.
