Global Unions Statement on Cyclone Idai

March 25: At last week’s Council of Global Unions(CGU) meeting that was held in Geneva, Switzerland, the CGU expressed sincere condolences to all people who have been affected by Cyclone Idai which hit Southern Africa starting 14 March resulting in severe flooding in Madagascar, Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe and devastating damage to the region. Currently close to 800 people have but the figures are to exceed over 1,000. However, the damage of Cyclone Idai will impact more than 2.6 million people in the region.

The Global Unions pledge to provide immediate support its affiliates in the affected countries on the “immediate and urgent work to tackle the physical and psychological health consequences of cyclone takes place, and in the enormous tasks of rebuilding infrastructure and regenerating economies to ensure decent work.”
