The members of the Korean Federation of Construction Industry Trade Union (KFCITU) of South Korea led by Kim Kyung Shin, Chair of the BWI Asia Pacific Regional Women’s Committee and member of the BWI World Board participated in the 2019 International Women’s Day mobilization organized by KFCITU’s national center, the Korean Construction Trade Unions.
South Korean has been hard by scandals involving sexual harassment, sexual violence, and filming women in public places and sharing it through social media without their approval or knowledge. The latest scandal has hit the South Korean entertainment industry and some of K-Pop’s biggest stars.
The theme of this year’s event was, “Let’s Make It! Equal Society for All!” The KFCITU delegation produced posters with signs calling for an end to gender-based violence and establishment of separate bathrooms and changing facilities for women workers.
In addition to participating in the mobilization, the KFCITU distributed via social media and through social network messaging systems such as Kakaotalk BWI’s call for an end to gender-based violence and a strong ILO convention as a vehicle to bring greater awareness amongst its over 50,000 members about the importance to stop gender-based violence.
