Take Action! Heat up Workers’ Rights, not the Planet!

The Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) recognises the immediate and negative impact of climate change on its trade union affiliates, with extreme heat and severe weather events posing increased risks to workers and their livelihoods. Heat waves, intensified by global warming, expose construction and forestry workers to health hazards. Meanwhile, in other parts of the world, workers are threatened by torrential rains and massive flooding. Despite these challenges, workers’ protections have not kept pace with the inclement weather, leading to risks such as heat-related illnesses. As essential contributors to crucial projects like building construction and environmental initiatives, workers face increasingly precarious conditions that demand urgent attention.

BWI-affiliated unions are at the forefront of advocating for responsible construction and sustainable forestry management. Their commitment extends beyond an idealistic vision; it is a survival imperative. These workers deserve quality jobs, safe environments, improved conditions, social protection, training opportunities, and union representation.

To amplify our cause, BWI launched the "Heat-up Workers’ Rights, Not the Planet" campaign, urging action from affiliated unions, partners and allies at the national and global levels. This initiative emphasises the vital connection between health and safety, demanding better working conditions during extreme heat and severe weather events.

Leading to the UN Climate Summit (COP28 Conference) in Dubai, BWI calls on all affiliates to take action stating on the opening of the event on 30 November until 10 December. This includes organising workplace initiatives, utilising campaign resources such as information sheets and posters, and leveraging social media to spread awareness. Our campaign aims to inspire and realise positive change by highlighting the importance of workers' rights in the face of a global climate emergency and advocating for improved living and working conditions on a global scale.
