Zimbabwe: Trade unions educate workers on OHS as fundamental labour right
BWI’s trade union affiliates in Zimbabwe joined the rest of the world in commemorating this year’s International Workers’ Memorial Day by organising an Occupational Safety and Health Workshop. Carrying the the themes “Health and Safety is our Right” and “Jobs shouldn’t Kill,"the workshop was attended by representatives from CLAWUZ, ZCATWU and GAPWUZ, majority of whom were women workers.
The workshop aimed to: 1) understand the key principles and aims of occupational safety and health, 2) appreciate the different types of occupational hazards, and 3) share OHS experiences.
The unions also discussed the necessity for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to recognise occupational health and safety as a fundamental right of all workers.
BWI explained that such a recognition will create a global consensus that will encourage the application of good occupational health and safety standards, and discourage countries and companies from seeking competitive advantage based on substandard conditions and practices.
