Africa and Middle East : Young workers gear up for BWI’s 2022 Congress
Carrying the theme “Together we build, united we are strong,” the young trade unionists who participated in the online event adopted key recommendations for the sector and a 2022-2025 regional youth action plan.
A regional youth report covering the years from 2017 to 2021 was also presented highlighting the youth’s contribution to union campaigns on decent work and workers’ rights in the construction, building, building material, wood and forestry sectors.
The impact of COVID-19 on youth employment in the region and the various adaption and resiliency strategies was likewise discussed. It was led by Venance F. Majula, Media and Communication officer from TUICO-Tanzania.
A sharing session on strengthening youth structures within trade unions was included in the event participated by young workers from 6 Sub-regions.
BWI Regional Representative Crecentia Mofokeng lauded the young trade unionists’ efforts to gather and consolidate their ranks amidst the physical challenges imposed by the pandemic. “We are proud of our youth in Africa and the Middle East. You are a constant force of innovation and positive change. We look forward to the new leadership to continue the initiatives of its predecessor with the same passion and dedication,” she said.
The event was chaired by Lebohang Vincent Ramabolu, Chair of Africa Middle East Regional and International Youth Committees. It was by attended 72 delegates, observers, guests, as well as BWI'S regional and global staff, from 54 affiliates representing 20 countries.
