BWI mourns passing of Croatian union leader Željko Kalauz

The Building and Woodworkers’ International (BWI) mourns the passing of Željko Kalauz, President of the Croatian Forestry Union last 27 May 2022.

 Željko was an amazing trade unionist, whose vast experience, knowledge and skills on trade union work have contributed massively to the promotion of workers’ rights in Croatia’s forestry industry. He was a dedicated member of the Central Committee of the Independent Trade Unions of Croatia (NHS). He also served as a member of the BWI European Committee for two terms (2010-2018), and a substitute member of the BWI World Council (2010-2013).   

Often on the road and in the company of union members, Željko enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow workers and had countless exchanges of thoughts with them. We are indebted to his deep commitment, and vast work and achievements. His passing left a deep and an indelible mark behind.

Željko had two great loves: his family and union work. BWI extends its condolences to his family, friends and trade union colleagues. He will be forever in our thoughts. We will cherish the fond memories we had with him as we continue the struggle for a better future for all workers.
