BWI supports UN humanitarian aid and work for Palestinians
The Building and Wood Workers' International (BWI) unequivocally supports the United Nations (UN) and its critical humanitarian endeavors, particularly its assistance to the Palestinian population, facilitated notably by agencies like the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). We join the Global Union Federations’ call on all nations to reaffirm their dedication to the UN framework and to demonstrate solidarity with the Palestinian working people by fully reinstating and even enhancing financial backing for UNRWA. Additionally, we call upon governments globally to fulfill their moral and humanitarian responsibilities by maintaining their contributions to the UN system and to reject any unwarranted cessation of support that would only worsen the plight of Palestinians.
UNRWA is an essential provider of key social and support services for nearly 6 million refugees across Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine. It provides the needed infrastructure, outreach, capacity, and expertise to meet the critical needs of people displaced by armed conflicts. Thus, it is deeply alarming and concerning that some countries decided to withdraw financial support from the UN system, particularly targeting UNRWA. Such actions not only undermine international solidarity, but also jeopardise the well-being and livelihood of vulnerable Palestinian communities. Abandoning UNRWA would precipitate a humanitarian catastrophe, exacerbating the already dire situation faced by Palestinians.
The Palestinian working people have long endured extreme challenges and hardships, including displacement, conflict, and economic instability. In such trying times, the humanitarian aid provided by the UN, especially through UNRWA, plays a critical role in alleviating suffering and fostering hope for millions of Palestinians. It is imperative that collective efforts are made to ensure the continuity of humanitarian aid programs, safeguarding the dignity and rights of Palestinians, and advancing the cause of peace and stability in the region.
