Freedom for Myanmar: A webinar on the ILO COI Report and NUG Tripartite Accreditation Council
As Myanmar's military coup enters its third year on February 1st, violence against trade unions and civilians continues unabated. Despite this, the trade union movement and the people's resistance in Myanmar have made significant strides in challenging the military's grip on the nation. Democratic processes, involving trade unions, to reclaim the country under the National Unity Government (NUG) have been actively pursued. However, more robust international responses are imperative to hold the junta accountable for its atrocities and to restore democratic institutions under the NUG, ensuring the respect and enforcement of human rights and civil liberties in Myanmar.
In this endeavor, the report of the ILO Commission of Inquiry on freedom of association and forced labor in Myanmar, released in October of last year, holds significant importance in compelling international stakeholders to take action. The Council of Global Unions (CGU) is closely collaborating with the Myanmar Trade Union Confederation (CTUM) and the Myanmar Labor Alliance (MLA) to utilize effective mechanisms within the ILO and constitutional frameworks. Concrete steps outlined in the ITUC circular on the COI report on Myanmar are being pursued (link to circular).
In alignment with these efforts, the CGU will host a webinar on February 1st for the NUG tripartite delegation to provide updates to the international trade union movement regarding the situation in Myanmar and to coordinate strategies for the upcoming ILO Governing Body meeting.
