Days before the international celebration of women’s month, BWI affiliate, Histadrut and its women's group, Na'amat held several activities to promote women empowerment and gender equality.
One of these activities was an “issue identification” event held last 24 February wherein women from 200 voting stations situated in Na’amat’s daycare centers all over the country were asked to vote for the most important issues women and working class families face today, and which organized labour need to address strategically.
A similar initiative was also conducted at the Histadrut headquarters in Tel Aviv.
The women identified the following issues:
- Support for parenthood;
- Equal representation for women;
- Early childhood education;
- Prevention of violence against women, including the need to support BWI’s advocacy for the ratification of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 190 and R. 206)
- Passage of Na'amat's bill seeking to promote gender equality education.
Meanwhile, Histadrut, Na’amat and the Commissioner for Employment of People with Disabilities organized a conference titled "Breaking Limits - Women with Disabilities in the Work World” last 25 February. The event brought together differently abled women who shared their personal stories of struggles and triumph against the challenges of disability in the world of work.
Na'amat synthesized the outcome of these activities with a formal public launching of a new campaign for greater gender equality, inclusion, women participation and empowerment held on 2 March.
The Na'amat movement (Nashim Ovdot U'Mitnadvot (Hebrew: נשים עובדות ומתנדבות), which means “Working and Volunteering Women,” is a nonprofit volunteer organization that provides educational and social services to Israeli women, children and families.
