"The fight for democracy continues," An interview with a Burmese trade union leader
Last 18 June, UN1A, the biggest trade union in Switzerland, published an article on its interview of Phyo Sandar, Assistant General Secretary of the Confederation of Trade Unions of Myanmar (CTUM).
UN1A and Sandar talked about the latest political and economic developments in Myanmar since the military staged a coup, the current status of the Burmese people’s struggle for democracy and the role of the international community, particularly the global trade movement, in helping return the country to the path of democracy and civilian rule.
Sandar has been involved in the trade union movement since 2006. Now she has to live underground.
CTUM’s affiliated sectoral national unions have around 65,000 members in various industries in Myanmar. It is part of Myanmar’s Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), which led the massive workers’ strikes and rallies in defense of democracy.
